DAE to collaborate with Avans University of Applied Sciences

On 11 July, Jacomine Ravensbergen, acting president of the Board of Governors of Avans University of Applied Sciences and Raf de Keninck, director of Design Academy Eindhoven (DAE) signed the Extended Labs collaboration agreement. This new partnership allows students from both institutions to share biobased knowledge and facilities

By building a bridge between the academic and practical applications of biobased research this new partnership allows students from DAE to use Avans’ laboratories. Included in this collaboration is the Material Incubator (MI) located at the Avans’ Applied Science Field lab in Den Bosch and the Biopolymer Application Centre (BAC) in Breda.

The MI is a space which encourages interactions with living organisms. Students are able to explore the unique qualities of algae, fungi, bacteria and plants and discover their positive characteristics and limitations. BAC is leading the transition from fossil based polymers to bio based polymers. The centre is available to allow students to develop, test and share knowledge.

These laboratories are part of Avans’ research centre’s CARADT and MNEXT, both of which have a wide range of research groups and professors. Wouter Meys, manager of Caradt explains,

“This collaboration enables us to apply our knowledge and methods beyond the traditional higher vocational education and provides us with the opportunity to make a significant impact on both education and industry”

Ralph Simons, director of MNEXT adds,

“The interaction between artists, designers and the materials transition is crucial. By having students already work with new materials during their education, we accelerate adoption by both industry and end users. Our collaboration with Caradt and the personal connection between MNEXT and Design Academy Eindhoven through André van de Wijdeven strengthens this vision. We are excited about the expansion into the Extended Labs, which allows us to increase our biobased knowledge and expertise.”

The collaboration between DAE and Avans University of Applied Sciences starts this academic year with presentations of the available laboratories to students and tutors, along with workshops focusing on the practical applications of whats possible with biobased materials.

This agreement ensures the commitment between the two institutions to lead in future innovations and guide the way for a more sustainable future.
