Lecture

Arna Mačkić
Active monuments
The lecture is about Studio L A’ search to develop their idea of active monuments: it is imperative to create places that bring people with different historical perspectives together and in which different stories have a place. Such places urge people to rethink their viewpoint; they allow for a shared experience and play a part in the daily life of the city’s communities. Places such as these can be thought of as “active monuments.
About Arna
Architect Arna Mačkić is founder of Studio L A (together with Lorien Beijaert), and writer of the book Mortal Cities & Forgotten Monuments. For L A, the practice of architecture is a device through which to investigate societal issues, phenomena and narratives, and to place them in renewed perspectives. Their projects often relate to inclusion and exclusion mechanisms, refugees, collective identity and public domain. Self-initiated projects, spatial interventions, writing, curating and public speaking are part of L A’s working method in order to move towards a more inclusive architecture and public space.
