Lecture
Thursday 29 September 2022
Leigh Tukker
Intersex: not everyone is considerd male or female. Trigger warnings apply.
Growing up you likely learned that you can be born with a male or female body. Period. While most people are born with bodies that society considers male or female, intersex people fall outside that cultural division. As a result, intersex people can face discrimination, and severe violence and abuse. Leigh will explain what intersex is, go into the historical background, discuss statistics on discrimination and the effect this has on intersex people, continuing about how the intersex community is trying to change this through collaboration within LGBTIQA+ and human rights advocacy, and ending with what you can do.
After the lecture there will be time for questions and a conversation.
Please note: this talk will include mentions of the discrimination and violence intersex people face. There are no graphic images, graphic descriptions will be kept to a minimal, but terms in regards to mental health and sexual violence that can potentially be triggering are included. Leigh requests to please take care of yourself and your mental health first and either skip the lecture, or leave during if you need to.
