Echoes of fear
Yujin Joung
A repaired porcelain vessel symbolises the resilience with which people have endured societal expectations in South Korea for generations.
South Korea’s tumultuous history is marked by colonialism, war, and financial instability. This legacy echoes across generations as rigid societal expectations, and permeates individual lives in the form of fears, deficiencies, and anxieties. Based on the story of Yujin Joung’s own lineage of women, Echoes of Fears celebrates resilience through the vulnerability of porcelain, a material susceptible to the imprints of past shapes, scars, and structures that may lead it to crack or collapse. How the clay responds to gravity and pressure is an expression of personal history, of how individuals endure the indelible imprints of societal expectations that shape their identities.
