EARTH KITCHEN

With her back-to-basics ‘Earth Kitchen’ of air-dried, compressed earth, Yuiko Shigeta re-examines our contemporary view of preserving food, cooking and eating. She uses this traditional material as her guide for a conceptual exploration. “By reconnecting to the original ways of our ancestors we can become more aware of the material, effort and time involved. This can help us to create a more human way of life, for us as well as future generations,” Yuiko says. An example of this is her earth refrigerator – a natural cooler without the need for electricity. At the end of its lifetime, it can be returned back to the earth.
