Metacarpus

Stefan Boerkamp

With 'Metacarpus', Stefan Boerkamp offers a glimpse into speculative visions of futures, which are simultaneously utopian and dystopian. The project presents jewellery, or, tools which are worn on an individual's hand. Set up as an excerpt from a future museum, 'Metacarpus' imagines timelines of human development surpassing the functional perception of the hand being limited to gripping and grasping, and showcases three artifacts from more or less distant futures. A series of three objects point towards an evolution in digitisation leading to a modification of the hand's function according to ideals of hyperproductivity, towards resource depletion and the re-enabling of primal instincts, and the abolishment of manual labour with the rise of new ways of communication through parapsychological abilities and vibration.
