+1 Day Streak

Sara Levarato

An exploration on the impact of gamification — the use of gaming strategies to increase motivation — on people using it for self-improvement.
To gamify something means to apply components and mechanics used in video games to non-game settings. +1 Day Streak examines the impact of gamification on people who willingly adopt it for self-improvement. Gamifying one’s life can be seen as an attempt to gain self-control, self-governance, and the possibility of self-reinvention. Success or failure becomes reduced to personal responsibility, disconnected from the social context and its complexities. Boundaries between work and play blur, creating closed realities where productivity rituals are performed for a perceived greater good. The gamified self evolves into an administrable object, assessed from an external, godlike perspective.
