Rose Daher built her own fairy-tale facade out of slices of toast. For her, bread is more than just food: it’s a canvas for creativity that brings her immense joy and feeds her imagination. Food features prominently in fairy tales, often with beguiling powers – just think of the witch’s gingerbread house, or Jack’s magic beans. Bricks and toast are standardised items that reveal the industrialisation of our habits. And both have remained the same down the ages. Drawing on decorative details of buildings from France and the Netherlands to Greece and Lebanon, she constructed a surrealist structure that encourages us to rethink what our homes might look like and be made of in the future.
