The Hidden Colour of Oak

Rebekka Evers

"The hidden colour is exposed to the outside world."

WHAT Wooden furniture that showcases the natural quality of oak responsible for causing a dramatic change in colour. HOW Oak contains a high percentage of tannic acid. This protects the tree against bacteria and insects. When tannic acid comes into contact with rust, an oxidation process takes place that turns the wood from brown to dark blue. HOW To control and accelerate this effect, Rebekka Evers soaked steel wool in vinegar and brushed the solution onto selected parts before assembling the final product. The colour inherent in the wood itself is allowed to shape the heart of the design, rather than coming as an external afterthought applied at the end.
