Philip Atanasov
A series of work made of repurposed hockey equipment challenges the deep-seated masculine narrative within heteronormative sports.
How does one reconcile with a family legacy that no longer aligns with their identity? Philip Atanasov, hailing from a lineage of ice hockey players, embarked on a journey of material and conceptual deconstruction of his childhood hockey equipment. By repurposing the deconstructed elements through generative design strategies, he created a series of works that explore the intersection of auto-theory and materiality. Through this process, Atanasov challenges the entrenched masculine narratives and archetypes within traditionally 'heteronormative' spaces like sports. Advocating that ‘nothing dies, everything transforms’, he embraces the potential for new materializations that allow the past to evolve while moving forward.
