“If only you have enough confidence in yourself, you will not be affected by the prejudice and discrimination posed on you,” is the self-protective mechanism that Paula Chang’s mother taught her since she was a child. Using autoethnographic research methodologies, she explored the limitations of this worldview and evolved a deeper understanding of inequality and injustice. This is represented in the rugs shaded from blue to red, colours which in Taiwanese culture show a transition to good fortune and positivity. Using storytelling, performance and conversational strategies she now encourages people to become sensitive to issues such as the language and nuance of bias, prejudice and discrimination.
