Alternative Marine Propulsion System
"Milan Baas proposes an outboard boating motor which innovates traditional motors by bypassing the use of a propeller. Traditional engines won't run without a propeller or some sort of flywheel, as it stores the rotational energy of the engine when in operation. Independently of size and application, propeller motors have in common that they're dangerous, expensive to produce and repair, and get clogged up regularly.
Instead, the 'Alternative Marine Propulsion System' makes use of an efficient electric motor which powers fins, and can be used for small-sized boats with low-speed applications. The design references how wild creatures propel themselves, mimicing their motions mechanically. The project explores boating as an activity with an environmental impact and proposes an industrial design solution which is neither harmful to wildlife nor humans."
