The Intangible Performance
Marie Kang
A series of machines reproduces the barely noticeable interactions between a user’s fingers and the screen of a smartphone.
The gestures we use most in our daily lives are barely noticeable. The interactions between our fingers and the screen of a smartphone are masked by the fast response of software. The Intangible Performance orchestrates a series of machines that interpret and perform the movements and gestures behind people’s use of a smartphone. For the duration of time, the performance shifts attention away from the screen’s output, repositioning the screen as the non-living thing in the interaction. This reemphasizes the living impulse of the finger, and the meanings contained in these otherwise invisible gestures finding creative choice where least expected.
