Lacuna

Maria Nery

Since masculine and feminine word forms are tightly woven into the structure of Latin languages, there is a complete gap for anyone who defies or rejects the gender binary. Over the course of five months Maria Nery attempted to drastically reduce the use of gendered language by learning new solutions and assessing current speech in order to break linguistic habits. Practice, data collection and note-taking became daily routine. This research resulted in ‘Lacuna’, a re-learning tool that offers users a space not only to practice new solutions but also to reflect and collect data on their current use of language. It's a platform for discussion and growth to assist the lengthy and collective process of changing a language.
