A Ceremonial Space for Funerals

Mai Rodtnes

"Many funeral customs are deeply rooted in religious traditions, often alienating non-religious individuals. Despite valuing personal choice throughout our lives, we face limited options for our final farewell. Mai Rodtnes created a non-religious funeral space, free from cultural and religious symbols, honouring life and its end with dignity.

The ethereal architecture fosters a communal atmosphere and can be adapted to any setting—whether an intimate gathering or a large event. Comprising three elements—flooring, chairs, and pillars—the design is both symbolic and practical. The sand-filled pillars represent the passage of time, leaving a gradient of colour as the sand trickles down. The charred wood chairs, resting on shared legs, enhance the solemnity and provide a dignified, adaptable environment for non-religious ceremonies."
