Botanical Role Play

Louisa Wolf

Botanical Role Play explores non-normative plant-human relationships in times of planetary extinction. A fetish outfit for gardening, kinky tools for role playing and queer plant representations are an unusual combination of two spheres that have more in common than might appear. Traditional depictions of plants and ecological education are based on binaries that reinforce flawed ideas of human-centric separation, classification and domination. These flawed ideas are also the basis of sexist, racist, ableist and classist oppression, pointing to the need for queer and feminist approaches in addressing the planet’s environmental and relational crisis. BDSM culture offers examples of non-normative relationships that play with dynamics of dominance in consensual ways.
