Borrowing materials

Lison Guéguen

A set of domestic objects made in accordance with the natural life cycles of materials explores mutually respectful relationships with the environment.

Conventional land ownership encourages absolute control over the environment and material appropriation of its resources. Instead, Borrowing Materials advocates for responsible design practices that align with the natural life cycles of materials. For Lison Guéguen, this translates as only using materials that are consciously ‘borrowed’ from within a 5 km radius of her workshop, cared for using local crafting techniques, and transformed into domestic objects intended for temporary use. These objects evolve as their materials change naturally over time. Rather than discarding when no longer usable, the materials are returned to where they were borrowed from, allowing them to reintegrate into their ecosystem. The designed objects are propositions for fostering temporal relationships with land.
