Much Alike Statues

Leo Maher

Much alike statues, antique furniture is symbolic of the fixed ideas of a particular community in a particular moment in time. Yet, as the present moves further from the past, so do our ideas, values and ethics. Artefacts that have long been markers of wealth, status, self-identity or taste, later reveal the imperial tendencies of a country’s past. In overlaying depictions of Britain’s bleak political present on the husk of the imperial past, the cabinet attempts to deface classical antiquitous values. Scenes of recent political scandals following the initiation of an emergency form of government as a result of the pandemic are depicted across the surface of the cabinet, mimicking traditional cabinetry techniques. The result is a plea for progression over conservation.
