Skyscraping

Leidy Karina Gómez Montoya

"The sky is a dynamic medium for chemical flows, aircraft, electromagnetic waves, viruses, charges, signals, spores, flying animals, hope, religion, and fears. High-definition representations of these phenomena are achieved through data production across scales—from pigeon aerial photographers to dust machine samples and satellite recordings—within a planetary-scale network that is neither neutral nor immaterial. Nation-states, institutions, and large companies operate in the sky to negotiate their governance, leading to territorial reconfigurations and the redistribution of resources, bodies, and wealth.

What means are we offered to perceive the sky? Where does it begin or end? And to whom does it belong? Skyscraping critically examines the tools, large-scale systems, and infrastructures that govern the sky by producing poetic counter-observations beyond numerical vision and the presumed truth of technical imagery. A projection tower maps these experimental viewpoints into the exhibition space according to their altitude, resulting in a steadily ascending moving image piece."
