Walls That Match My Mood
Laura Stachoń
A spatial device that can shrink or expand helps shy individuals to adapt to challenging environments.
In public settings such as schools or workplaces, shy people often feel compelled to conform to an extroverted, confident, and competent ideal. Any behaviours or perceptions that deviate from this norm are stigmatized. Through her personal exploration of shyness, Laura Stachoń recognizes the connection between a person’s perception of space and their sense of self. Different people possess unique visual, kinaesthetic, tactile, and thermal qualities that can be either hindered or enhanced by their spatial environment. Walls That Match My Mood is a physical device that can shrink or expand to transform perceptions of space. The project seeks to promote neurodiversity-friendly public spaces, and especially, celebrate the valuable qualities of silence, invisibility, vulnerability, and attentive listening that shy individuals possess.
