Un_muting
Can an appreciation of non-human communication help us with collaborative survival in the age of the Anthropocene? Looking at network systems of trees, Karolina Mętrak asks if we can expand the concept of interspecies communication and create a dialogue as a step towards rebuilding our relationship with nature. 'Un_muting' explores a possible union of tree, human and technology. Sensors that mimic hearing aids capture tree 'conversations', which are then translated into audible sound – the basis of human communication. The project also contains a visual representation of nature. With technology as a collaborator in the form of the bigGAN algorithm, Mętrak creates living, morphing portraits of trees.
