Factory of Inefficiency
To demonstrate that there is value in inefficiency, Juno Brown built a tiny (1.5 x 3 m), fully functioning match factory, in which he acts as the only employee. With this, he revisits the once flourishing match industry in Eindhoven, which was dubbed the ‘light city’ well before the Philips light-bulb era. The ‘Factory of Inefficiency’ playfully defies the current industrial focus on growth and efficacy, provoking questions around sustainable working and living. It considers the merit of other values, like the pleasure of work, an appreciation of imperfection, or the excitement of stumbling across the unexpected. The moveable installation aims to bring different perspectives to exhibitions like Dutch Design Week that herald new technologies and innovation.
