When it Comes Out
Jiheon Chae
A set of physical tableware demonstrates using the digital as an aesthetic style rather than just a tool.
This project shows what happens when 3D digital-style tableware objects come out of the screen and into the real world. Nowadays, we are on the blurry boundary between digital and physical reality. Until now, the digital world mostly reflected the real world. But without the limitations of the laws of physics, a distinctive digital aesthetic has emerged. Jiheon Chae suggests seeing digital no longer as a tool or medium but as a style. To test this idea, she asked herself what objects related to the behaviour of eating—in a way, the farthest you can get from the digital realm—would look like if they had a digital style. The result a set of tableware, shows how the digital style enters the real world.
