Rendering Meaning

Jelle Spieker

"The display emphasises the importance of subtle nuances inherent in language."

WHAT An analogue typographic display consisting of 210 paper ‘sails’ that are rotated by small motors to reveal a black or white side. Together they form a word or expression. HOW Pairs of synonyms appear in succession, highlighting slight nuances in meaning. ‘Angst’ for example, implies a general and existential emotional turmoil, while ‘fear’ describes an emotion caused by a perceived threat. WHY Constantly in motion, this public installation has a mesmerising quality. The paper has a physicality and sound that is more engaging than a screen. It introduces a new and unfamiliar format for presenting typography.
