5 Point Sequence

James Grünfeld

Visual noise is so pervasive in cities, it was difficult to recognise until the global lockdown paused everything. James Grünfeld used sculpture to unfurl the material complexity and volume of visual pollution from architecture, air traffic, automobiles, construction, and more, that an eye picks up in just a glance. Points of material tension were then recorded with contact microphones. The tensions and harmonics of the visual noise create a sonic portrait of the object, presented as a audio installation and on pressed vinyl. The temporality of sound recreates a moment of pause in which to reconsider the structures and forms of the built environment.
