Sculpting, glazing and firing are just a few steps that go into making porcelain. Compared to other ceramics, porcelain becomes uniquely translucent, more durable and non-porous after it’s been fired. But when making it the material can come out misshapen, cracked or discoloured. A large amount of the product is therefore thrown away. Idwert Petter wants to prevent this unnecessary waste by designing from the material’s needs instead of what we want it to become. Through a series of shape studies she arrived at a double-walled structure with tension lines. A strong shape that always comes out of the kiln as intended. In this way, the porcelain’s tolerance is never pushed too far while the lines emphasize its beauty.
