Perennial Practices
Floral embroidery is often sidelined in artistic discourse due to its mimetic nature and association with femininity. It is frequently disregarded as lacking in originality. In the domains of art and design, concepts of originality, copyright, and individual achievement often take precedence. ‘Perennial Practices’ re-examines floral embroidery within a broader ecosystem, linking botanical and human crafts to celebrate their capacity for creative abundance. Through an embroidered herbarium and a written design methodology, the project draws parallels between plant communities and the collaborative ethos inherent in creative endeavours. The installation showcases how domestication and feminisation have often marginalised a significant aspect of art and design history, casting it as superficial. Ida Stubbe Teglbjaerg demonstrates the power of collective resistance within these interconnected narratives.
