Archiving the Embodied
Taking a phenomenological approach, Helen Milne uses and examines the inherent gestural choreography of weaving — a result of disciplinary technologies – situating the body as the locus of inquiry, understanding and knowledge production. ‘Archiving the Embodied’ aims to close the gap between academic and craft knowledge that, paradoxically, overly theorises the notion of ‘show, don’t tell’ and the lived experience of a female craftsperson engaging in an ancient bodily practice. The digital documentation and dissemination of weaving choreographies attempts to democratise archival work around an oft-neglected aspect of traditionally ‘female’ craft, and document bodily organisation in the world.
