De Hoedjesfabriek

Fiep van Smeerdijk

Each year, festivals in the Netherlands generate over 50 million kilogrammes of waste, much of which ends up in landfill. Most event signs and banners are not recyclable and are thrown away after a single use. Piles of sturdy, colourfully printed and waterproof material are discarded out of convenience. ‘De Hoedjesfabriek’ is a portable workstation where old banners are transformed into funky headpieces. Fiep van Smeerdijk guides festival guests in creating bucket hats from materials considered waste just moments before. The colours and designs on the PVC combine into surprising compositions. This project offers a new perspective on single-use materials and potential uses at their waste source locations. Why waste a colourful banner when it could offer you some shade?
