Scars of the Landscape
"Scars of the Landscape investigates the silenced narratives of the victims of the Spanish Civil War and Franco’s dictatorship. Informed by the designer's family history, the project evolved into a more extensive social critique of Spain’s collective memory and historical injustices. Using a journalistic approach, the audiovisual essay explores the reparation process carried out by the Asociación para la Recuperación de la Memoria Histórica in Belalcázar during the exhumation of a mass grave in November 2023.
With this project, Eva Marie Pobeda Ferrand researches how exhumations in Spain contribute to social justice and historical vindication. The installation recreates the excavation site with 200 handmade cobblestones, thus establishing a platform of discourse that connects personal, collective and institutional memories. The project proposes a process of memorialisation that confronts silence and underlines the urgency of a culture of collective historical memory in Spain."
