Hyperthermal Tales

Eleni Vrettakou

"Through the lens of temperature and the concept of the ‘thermal border’, Hyperthermal Tales documents the lives of sea turtles, lionfish, and olive trees in Pylos, Greece, as indicators of climate precarity. Spanning human and non-human temporalities, it reveals how behaviours and habits are shaped by climate responses, highlighting the constant flux of ecosystems. Humans are depicted in dual roles as both aggressors and essential contributors, conserving, adapting to, and sometimes forcibly altering nature.
A triptych of moving images, including footage captured with a thermal camera, narrates these tales. Viewers experience the film under an installation of infrared heating elements, blurring the boundary between comforting and discomforting heat. The installation prompts the question: Where does the thermal border that triggers human migration and action lie?"
