Majmaa
Hospitality, warmth and sharing are values extolled by Moroccan culture. Dina Lebbar showcases these qualities with a music synthesiser. Called ‘Majmaa’, from the Arabic verb Jamaâa (جَمَعَ), meaning ‘coming together’, the instrument celebrates the music and crafts of her homeland. The shape is inspired by tables with food placed at the centre for sharing. Pieces of lemon tree and brass set into a walnut base form the surface. Each brass touch sensor triggers the sound of a traditional instrument, such as the guembri, oud or darbouka. Close collaboration with woodworkers and a digital artist facilitates this combination of craftmanship and technology. It breaks down the barrier between tradition and modern, uniting symphonic and techno music in a unique concert performance.
