Mutant

As a homosexual man from South Korea, Dae Kim describes feeling like a ‘mutant’ within the framework of normality cultivated by a modern and rational society. Mutants and minorities are rarely accepted in this heteronormative world.

The project Mutant aims to fulfil, explain, and reveal how his desires and dreams have met obstructions, due to societal expectations of gender. Kim represents himself with objects that are usually considered uninteresting and inferior, mutating them into something more grandiose and superior as a way of encouraging people to consider the implicit boundaries around gender that exist in different cultures and societies around the world.
