Pagan Festival

Chongjin Chen

As a Chinese designer living in the Netherlands, Chongjin Chen uses her signature pinch of humour to navigate conflicting systems of identity. One system speaks of the habits and values that were normalised in her since birth, and another admonishes her to behave according to new codes of normal. Pagan Festival is a speculative cultural event that chooses to rather celebrate the fascinating beauty that emerges from cultural plurality, than the kitschy national identity that emerges from patriotism. Transcending temporal and spatial codes, Pagan Festival is not limited to a fixed day or location, existing whenever and wherever people practise their ‘paganised’ sense of normality.
