Stones Also Need to Rest

Lorainne Legrand

When clay is wet, it is a living material, and by shaping it, Lorraine Legrand gives life to it. When it dries, she takes care of it, as she would take care of an ailing body. When it is fired, the material no longer lives, but carries the traces of a shape that once was animated. The resulting forms evoke abstracted minerals and bodies, carcasses and remains. The work invites us to reconsider the constructed borders between life and death, animate and inanimate, human and nature, and that which should be cared for and that which is discarded.
