It’s Not Just About The Dishes
In order to survey the division and nature of labour at home, Elisa Mirkil Queralt has repurposed ordinary kitchen cupboards, dishware and sponges into an interactive installation. The project builds on the ideas of the 1970s feminist movement Wages for Housework, including that the home only superficially appears to be immune to capitalist relations. The same is true of data: simply because data isn’t acknowledged or officially collected, doesn’t mean that it isn’t there. Moreover, just because data appears objective and the home appears neutral, doesn’t mean it isn’t a construction of human bias and emotion. By bringing home and data into contact, the designed nature of both becomes evident.
